The ever expanding equipment discussion

Like many sports shooters I get asked about what gear I use, and even more, what gear I recommend others should use.  Joe Schwartz from derbyinfocus.com has written up an awesome post about sports photo gear and I’m sharing it here [link].

The guy is a rock-star in the derby world and deserves a ton of credit for this blog entry.  Even if he shoots Canon.  ;^)

Here’s what I will add to his post:

1) I shoot Nikon, but he’s right, Canon and Nikon are about neck-and-neck.  The highest end Nikon (D3_) was considered better than the Canon 1D Mark IV for a while, but Canon has upgraded as has Nikon.  Plus those machines are about $5-6k. For me the biggest factor in having those cameras is being able to shoot high-speed in the low crappy light of high school gyms.

2) There are a few really good review sites out there, I really like Ken Rockell, and DPReview.  If you are serious about gear, you will need to do plenty of research.
